Volunteer and Communications Coordinator

Summary: Provide a connection to Shelter Care Ministries through effective communication and fulfilling volunteer experiences. Supervise volunteer scheduling, coordinate donations from members of the community, maintain relationships with clients and staff, and communicate the impact of Shelter Care’s work to a variety of audiences, including the general public, donors and other stakeholders, staff, and clients.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Volunteer and Community Donations:

  • Identify and train community volunteers to support the mission and work of Shelter Care
  • Organize community outreach events, provide presentations to highlight the Shelter Care’s work and volunteer opportunities to universities, corporations, and other partners in the community to increase community interest and awareness
  • Solicit donations and other in-kind support for programs as identified by program staff
  • Ensure housing units have appropriate furnishings to meet the needs of incoming families
  • Coordinate volunteer placement and provide recognition of volunteers
  • Work with program coordinators to identify needs and develop fulfilling volunteer activities

Database Management:

  • Maintain effective and accurate volunteer database
  • Track volunteer hours per program and/or grant
  • Catalog all donations and values in Donor Perfect

Create Communications:

  • Write, edit, and assemble content in print and electronic platforms, including social media
  • Master knowledge of Shelter Care programs and their impact on the community
  • Assist with giving campaigns and direct mailings
  • Represent Shelter Care at community events and give presentations as assigned

Build Relationships:

  • Assist with event planning and logistics
  • Create positive working relationships with donors, volunteers, and community
  • Represent Shelter Care in a positive and professional manner in interactions with other staff, organizations, individuals, the media and general public

Knowledge and Skills Desired:

  • Associate’s Degree (Bachelor’s preferred) in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Community Development, Fundraising, or other related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 2-3 years of experience in related field
  • Ability to initiate and manage projects
  • Excellent organizational, communications, and administrative skills
  • Computer proficiency with experience in Microsoft Office Suite, including Publisher and PowerPoint
  • Experience with social media including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram
  • Ability to work with and supervise volunteers
  • Ability to write for a variant of platforms
  • Ability to meet deadlines with quality work
  • Flexibility in scheduling with occasional evening or weekend work
  • Must have quality interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Need to maintain valid Illinois Driver’s License and driving record that is acceptable to Shelter Care’s insurer
