HOW TO MARCH

Thank you for stepping up – this is a remarkable journey of faith and dedication to the people we are called to love to a higher level of being – people who have been marginalized and vilified in our nation. Every step taken in love raises the level of response to those around us who daily struggle in the condition of poverty. So whether you take ten steps or a thousand steps, you are already making a difference and for that we are grateful for contributing your energy to this mighty cause.

Marching is the simple act of putting one foot in front of the other it is our historical legacy in this country and a way of raising awareness about suffering and injustice.

Here are some tips that will help you along the way, and make your march a success in your personal and spiritual growth.

Marchers must be able to take care of themselves, though a support vehicle will travel along with us to DC and everyone will have a phone.

Keep a written journal about marching – What calls you to join the march? What will you discover about yourself? What pulls you into the world and how do you relate to those who suffer from poverty?

Secure a good pair of shoes – if you are marching for one day a good pair of shoes and socks that wick away moisture will be important.

The Day Pack – a light weight day pack is important, carry your food stuff, water, medical supplies, wallet and some cash, phone. Keep your hand free.

Clothing – wear bright colors as we will be walking along busy streets. Keep a hat or scarf around your head to protect yourself from the sun (yes even in cool weather) and from flying debris from the street. Carry some sun screen for your face and neck. Dress in layers and be prepared for wet and cold weather.

Marching for more than One Day – If you are walking for more than a day and no more than three days, carry light weight personal items – leave make-up and dryers at home, we may not have showers, however Backpacker Magazine is a huge source of hiking and camping readiness tips. Even though we are not in wilderness and most likely not face extreme condition, if you are taking on marching for more than three days, be prepared is very important.

I am pushing a cart with my supplies and tent and other equipment because I am marching the entire way. After much research I choose the cart. If the cart becomes too burdensome I may abandon it for a back pack, I am unsure at this time.

Be prepared for transformation and challenge. We are marching together so we will grow together. We will learn about each other and grumble and get cranky and laugh and cry together, there is simply no way around connecting to each other in this adventure.
